Note:

You should determine the read zone before you tighten all screws. Refer to
Marking the Read Zone section below. You can adjust SmartPass while
determining the read zone. After you have defined the read zone, tighten all
screws and straps.

Marking the Read Zone

TransCore recommends that you adjust SmartPass for the ideal read zone before
connecting SmartPass to permanent input/output and communications cables.

The antenna pattern of SmartPass looks like a pear-shaped balloon. To mark the read
zone, you will need a buzz box, which is described in Chapter 3, “Quick SmartPass
Test”; a piece of chalk or roll of tape; and a test tag attached to a yardstick.

Note:

If you hold the test tag in your hand, your hand will absorb the RF signal,
and the test results will be incorrect.

Use vinyl electrical tape to attach the test tag to the end of the yardstick. Be sure the
logo on the tag is level when the yardstick is upright and faces the same direction,
horizontally or vertically, as the logo on SmartPass.
