Installing SmartPass®
To mark the read zone
1. Connect the red and white leads from the buzz box to the red and white pair of
wires from the SmartPass cable.
2. Twist the red and green pair of wires from the SmartPass cable together. This
turns on the RF power continuously.
The buzz box will buzz when a tag is in the read zone of SmartPass.
3. Stand directly in front of and about 1.5 m away from SmartPass holding the
stick so that the tag is positioned at the average height and angle as when it is
installed in a vehicle. The test tag will cause the buzz box to sound.
4. Move to the left.
5. When the buzz box sound stops, mark the pavement with chalk or tape at the
location of the tag when the sound stopped.
6. Step backward 0.3–0.6 m and repeat Step 5, moving the tag back and forth to
find the edge of the read zone and putting marks on the pavement each time the
buzz box sound stops. Continue moving the tag to various locations until the
read zone is fully marked.
When you finish marking the read zone, the marks on the pavement will indicate the
area where SmartPass reads tags, called the read zone. Figure 5-6 is a view of a
typical installation. The
x marks show the outside edges of an ideal read zone.
