Installing Tags on Vehicles
Mounting Exterior Tags
Exterior tags are used in applications that require tags to remain mounted to one
vehicle. The read zone of SmartPass installed overhead is reduced when an exterior
tag is mounted on a license plate.
TransCore recommends that exterior tags be ordered from the factory with high-
tension, double-sided tape already applied to the tag. Exterior tags may be mounted
on metal or plastic bumpers. A flat surface is needed.
Exterior tags may also be ordered with blind rivet mounting.
You need the following materials to mount exterior tags:
• Degreasing solvent or cleaner and water
• Sponge and dry cloth
• If mounting tags that have rivet holes, two rivets, each with a 0.48 cm
diameter and 1.59 cm head
Mounting Tag to Bumper with Tape
Follow these steps to mount the tag on a flat surface of a plastic or metal bumper
with tape.
1. Clean and degrease the tag mounting area on the bumper with solvent or
cleaner.
2. Dry the area thoroughly using a clean cloth.
3. Remove the backing from the double-sided tape on the back of the tag, as shown
in Figure 4-5.

4. Position the tag over the mounting area, ensuring that the logo on the tag and
the logo on the SmartPass are oriented in the same position, horizontal or
vertical.
5. Press the tag firmly against the bumper.
To remove an exterior tag mounted with double-sided tape, slowly pry off the tag
with a thin tool, such as a putty knife.
