Chapter 4

Installing Tags on Vehicles

This chapter provides instructions on how to mount the tag in the
interior or on the exterior of the vehicle.

Overview

The site plan should indicate where to locate the tags on the vehicles.

Note:

The TransCore logo on the tag and the logo on the SmartPass

®

must be

aligned in the same direction. Both logos must be horizontal or both logos
must be vertical. A SmartPass with a logo horizontal cannot read a tag with
the logo vertical.

To work reliably, tags must directly face SmartPass as the vehicle approaches
SmartPass. Tags may not be read reliably if the tag is hand-held, attached to a sun
visor, or attached to a metal window post.

Note:

Metallized coatings on some vehicle windshields and windows absorb the
RF signal emitted by SmartPass, thus causing tags to be misread. Always
mount tags on the exterior of vehicles that have a metallized coating.
TransCore recommends that you mount the tag on the bumper.

Locations for Installing Interior Tags

Install an interior tag inside the vehicle, typically on the driver’s side of the
windshield. Install the tag in either the upper or lower corner, at least 5 cm from any
metal. Figure 4-1 shows the interior location of a tag when SmartPass is mounted by
the curb on the left side.
