Switch management
The management unit of the switch creates an IP node with its own IP and
MAC address. This makes it possible to manage the switch over SNMP (Sim-
ple Network Management Protocol) using the Ethernet connection. The man-
agement information is stored on the switch in the management information
base (MIB).
The MIB is an abstract tree describing all devices in the network. The switch
implements only a necessary subset of this tree.
10.1 Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
SNMP is a protocol for configuring and monitoring network devices using the
Ethernet network. The switch network can be configured and monitored over
SNMP using freely available software.
SNMP commands
The switch supports SNMP versions 1, 2c and 3. Version 1 includes the fol-
lowing SNMP commands:
Trap
Informs the management station of a relevant event on the switch.
GetRequest
Requests a value from the management agent.
GetNextRequest
A walkthrough of all the management information, offered by the manage-
ment agent.
SetRequest
Sets a value in the management information of the agent (e.g., in order to
configure a device).
GetResponse
The response of the management agent to a GetRequest, GetNextRe-
quest or SetRequest from the management station.
