Description of functions
This section covers the basic functions of the switch.
Detailed information about the management functions is available in Section
10 "Switch management".
4.1
Basic functions
4.1.1
Protocol
Settings
Settings per port:
Transfer rate
Auto-Negotiation
Settings for all ports:
Duplex mode
You can use a web browser to change the settings (see Section 11.5 "PORTS
menu").
NOTICE
The settings are fixed in the software as soon as the switch is turned on.
Data communication
The Ethernet ports of the TREE-managed switch product range support the
following Ethernet protocols based on the IEEE-802.3 standards:
100BASE-TX Full duplex 100 Mbits/s
100BASE-TX half duplex 100 Mbits/s
10BASE-T full duplex 10 Mbits/s
10BASE-T half duplex 10 Mbits/s
NOTICE
TREE M-6TX, Art. no. 58182
Pin 1 does not support the mode 10BASE-T half-duplex 10 Mbits/s.
Auto-negotiation and
auto-sensing
The switch uses certain mechanisms to select the protocol with the highest
level of performance between the link partners:
Auto-negotiation
: This function allows link partners to exchange protocol set-
tings. If the link partner accepts auto-negotiation, the switch automatically se-
lects the protocol with the highest level of performance.
Auto-sensing
: If auto-negotiation is not possible, the switch will attempt to
use auto-sensing to determine the link mode passively.
Auto-crossover
The switch automatically detects whether the received data is arriving on lines
1 and 2 or lines 3 and 6 (conductor pair RD+/RD- or TD+/TD-). The switch can
perform a crossover if necessary (see 3.1.2 "Interfaces").
HINT
The auto-crossover function makes it possible to use cross-over and straight-
through cables.
