SNMP
Simple Network Management Protocol Used to monitor devices in a network for
states that require the attention of an administrator.
STP, Spanning Tree Protocol
A configuration protocol for bridges specified in the IEEE 802.1d standard. Different
ports in the bridges are switched to stand-by in order to prevent data packets looping
around the network in any structure containing bridges. This ensures that a tree net-
work functions properly. The stand-by ports/connections can be used as redundant
connections if an error occurs.
S/STP
Screened Shielded Twisted Pair. The individually twisted pairs of a twisted pair cable
are protected using foil shielding. The two individually shielded pairs are surrounded
by a shared copper braid shield.
Switch, Switching
A switch is a network component that generally has the same properties as a bridge.
In contrast to the bridge, the switch can create numerous connections between ports
at the same time. These connections are established dynamically and temporarily de-
pending on the data traffic. Each connection has the full nominal bandwidth.
Twisted Pair
A data line with twisted conductor pairs. The twist optimizes transmission properties
and prevents electromagnetic interference. Twisted pair cables are available in a va-
riety of different qualities for different transfer rates.
VLAN
Virtual LAN or Virtual Local Area Network. A logical local network with a much larger
range than traditional local networks.
Web server
A computer/processor with a program that permits HTTP queries from web clients
and provides HTTP responses (normally websites).
