OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
INFORMATION ON THE METAL DETECTOR
NOTE
: Warranty coverage will not extend to con-
sequential damages.
The metal detector is used for stopping the feed rolls
when a ferrous metal object is detected between them.
The metal detector antenna is mounted inside the lower
front feed rolls. When the system is working properly,
the following or similar objects will be detected with ap-
proximately 95% accuracy:
• steel fence posts
• plow points
• wires
• hitch pins
• scrap iron
• bolts
• wrenches, tools
• rake teeth
• steel pipes
The detector will only detect ferrous metals - those with
iron. It is therefore possible that damages be caused to
the machine because of non-detectable objects entering
the cutter head. The following is a list of objects (or sim-
ilar), that will not be detected:
• stones
• cement
• stainless steel
• aluminium
• wood
• tiles
CAUTION! An intensive magnetic field may be
present, therefore, persons with a pacemaker,
hearing aid and/or any other type of devices of
this nature, MUST BE CAREFUL around the ma-
chine. The magnets could affect these types of
devices.
IMPORTANT!
Because of the limitations of the system, there is an area
at both ends of the lower feed roll where the sensitivity
is reduced. As the distance from the lower feed rolls in-
creases, the detector’s sensitivity also decreases.
IMPORTANT!
The metal detector cannot and MUST not be expected
to be a 100% proof device.
IMPORTANT!
The maximum performance of the metal detector sys-
tem can be expected only if it is kept in good operat-
ing condition and all parts are working correctly. As any
electrical system, this unit is subject to malfunction due
to defects, occasional breakdowns, misuse and normal
wear and tear.
NOTE
: The metal detector is only sensitive to moving
objects. For this reason, it is possible for an ob-
ject to pass very slowly over the detector “un-
detected”. Keep this in mind when manually
checking the system.
DAILY CHECKS ON THE METAL DETECTOR
It is recoended to check the unit frequently, and at the
beginning of each operating day, to be assured of its
proper working condition, using the following procedure:
1. Check wire harnesses, connectors, connections, etc.
2. Check the stop pawl system for free motion. Check
the alignment of the NEUTRAL/REVERSE sensors,
and perform necessary adjustments.
3. Initialize the metal detection system by switching the
power and alarm to ON and shifting the transmis-
sion to REVERSE. (refer to INITIALIZATION on the
next page).
4. Shift the transmission in FORWARD then stop the
Forage Harvester and tractor engine. Leave the
metal detector ON.
CAUTION: Always stop the tractor engine before
carrying out this test.
5. Pass a metallic object between the front feed rolls in
a quick backward and forward motion. The solenoid
should release the stop pawl onto the ratchet stop
cam. The transmission should shift from FORWARD
to NEUTRAL automatically.
6. The alarm, making an intermittent and slow “beep”
and its pilot light should iediately come ON if the
system is operating properly.
7. Initialize the system as described previously to ver-
ify if it is operating normally.
8. If the system fails to operate, refer to the TROUBLE-
SHOOTING section to determine the problem. Make
necessary repairs before proceeding any further.
DANGER: To prevent serious injuries or
death from rotating feed rolls, do not ser-
vice or make any adjustments without first:
1) Stopping the PTO and shutting off the
tractor engine. 2) Making sure that all parts inside
the Forage Harvester have stopped rotating.
