KNIFE GRINDING - FIGURE 194
DANGER: To prevent serious injury or death, the
operator should be the only person to perform the
knife grinding operation.
DANGER: The main transmission should be in
the NEUTRAL position. Switched off the tractor
engine before removing the cover on the cutter
head. Make sure the safety brake is engaged.
DANGER: To prevent serious injury or death from
rotating knives, stand on the ground when knives
are turning. Keep others away.
DANGER: Wear safety goggles and do not wear
baggy or loose fitting clothing.
NOTE
: Please refer to the SAFETY SECTION on page
13.
1. Raise the grinder housing (item 1) and rest it against
the supports (item 2), after having loosened the han-
dles (item 3).
2. Open the cover (item 5). To do so, use a 3/4” wrench
to loosen the nuts, then rotate the retaining plates
(item 4). Re-tighten these nuts so they don’t get
loose from the vibration caused by the grinding.
3. Lower the stone housing (item 1) and re-tighten the
handles (item 3).
4. Start the tractor engine and engage the PTO. In-
crease engine speed to half the normal operating
speed (approximately 600 RPM for a 1000-1000
Forage Harvester and 750 RPM for a 1000-800 For-
age Harvester).
5. Adjust the grinder stone on the knives by pulling fully
the stone carriage towards the operator to produce
sparks (the stone will engage itself slightly on the
bevelled edges of the knives). Pull the carriage by
sequences, that is by pushing it slightly forward be-
fore pulling it towards the operator, and so on. You
will hear a ”click” sound each time the carriage is
pulled.
6. Proceed with the knife sharpening by pulling the rod
(item 8) in order to go past the cutter head. The
travel time of the stone from one side of the cut-
ter head to the other should not take more than five
seconds. This stone motion will insure a regular and
even grinding.
7. The stone should be near the operator before it
is lowered again, one tooth at a time, to continue
grinding.
8. Once the grinding procedure completed, slightly
raise the stone by pushing the stone carriage to the
opposite side from the operator. Push the carriage
by sequences, that is by pulling it slightly before
pushing it away from the operator, and so on. You
will hear a ”click” sound each time the carriage is
pushed. The cover (item 5) will maintain the carriage
in place.
9. Disengage the PTO and switch off the tractor en-
gine. Raise the stone housing (item 1), put the cover
(item 5) back in place and lock it. Lower the housing
and lock it with the handles (item 3).
10. Re-tighten the retaining plates (item 4).
NOTE
: During the grinding operation, move the stone
evenly over the entire width of the cutter head.
This will prevent the knives from burning and
also insure an even surface.
NOTE
: DO NOT open the carriage guard (item 9)
during grinding.
