ADJUSTMENTS - MAINTENANCE

KNIFE ADJUSTMENT - FIGURE 193

CAUTION: Do not hitch the Forage Harvester to

the tractor for the KNIFE ADJUSTMENT OPER-

ATION.

CAUTION: Always proceed with the knife adjust-

ment with great precautions.

CAUTION: Be careful when working inside the

cutting chamber. A piece of wood should block

the cutting head in order to prevent any sudden

rotating motions from the latter (see Figure 246).

The Forage Harvester knives should be readjusted

after successive grindings have shortened them by

approximately 1/4” (6) since the shear bar cannot be

moved forward by more than 1/4” (6).
To adjust the knives:
1. The previous day, clean and apply oil on all cutter

head bolts (items 1 and 2).

2. Remove the shear bar, the cutter head cover, and

the guard used as support of the cutter head cover

(items 5 and 7).

3. Loosen the knife bolts (item 2) and adjusting screws

(item 1) supporting the knives.

4. Install the round guiding bar (item 3) (located in the

tool box of the Forage Harvester) (item 7) in the

holes (item 4) meant for this operation; it will be

used as a guide for the knife adjustment.

5. Both adjusting screws (item 1) on the back side of

each knife will be used for adjusting the knives so

that they slightly touch the guiding bar (item 3) on

its full length.

6. Slightly tighten the four knife bolts and readjust by

using the two screws (item 1) on the reverse side of

each knife. Then, tighten the four knife bolts (item

2) permanently to 300 - 320 lb-ft (407 to 434 N-M).

7. Once the knives perfectly adjusted, remove the

guiding bar and reinstall the shear bar, taking care

to choose the side with the best cutting edge. Install

the cutter head cover and its support (items 5 and 7).

Proceed with an appropriate knife grinding in order

to obtain a good cylindrical cutter head (please refer

to page 134 to page 137 regarding the shear bar

assembly and installation instructions. Refer to page

132 for instructions on how to grind the knives.
