COOLING SYSTEM
MAINTENANCE SERVICE
Efficient functioning of the cooling system has an impotent
bearing on economy, dependability, service life and other performance
factors of the engine.
For maintenance of normal engine service do the following:
1.
Fill the cooling system with special antifreeze coolants, or in
unusual cases for short time with clean soft water. «Hard» water
should be softened and settled.
2.
Pour in coolant from clean containers through a funnel with
gauze.
3.
Monitor the coolant temperature, it should be within
75-90
o
C.
4.
To prevent distortion of cylinder heads and cylinder block
jackets, add coolant into a system of the hot engine gradually with the
engine running.
5.
If the cooling system is filled with water. regularly flush out
the system of cooling with clean water from a special washing gun, if
not available, with a strong, preferably pulsating jet of clean water.
Descale the cooling system at regular intervals.
6.
At application as a cooling liquid of freezing at low tem-
peratures composition “Tosol”, periodically watch its color. If anti-
freeze gets red - brown painting it testifies to the beginning of corro-
sion process of details of cooling system. It is necessary to replace anti-
freeze, having washed out before the cooling system (see item 5)
7.
Check frequently the condition of the pump impeller gland
seal, bearing in mind that the coolant seeping into water pump bearings
will ruin the latter. Failure of the gland seal is symptomized by coolant
leaking from the drain hole (fig. 72) on the pump casing; this hole must
not be plugged. The pump with faulty gland seal remove from engine
and send it for repairs
8.
If the temperature of the engine is other than that stated in
specifications examine the thermostats and their gaskets. The main
valve of the thermostat should start to open at 80
±
2°C (be specified on
the thermostat body). The valve should be opened completely, moving
on 8 mm from its seat. The faulty thermostat replace with new one.
