Many applications use a high performance RAM, such as a DDR2 SDRAM to provide temporary
storage. In this demonstration hardware and software designs are provided to illustrate how the two
DDR2 SDRAM SODIMMs on the DE4 can be accessed. We describe how the Altera’s “DDR2
SDRAM High Performance Controller” IP is used to create a DDR2-SDRAM controller, and how
NIOS processor is used to read and write the SDRAM for hardware verification. The DDR2
SDRAM controller handles the complex aspects of using DDR2 SDRAM by initializing the
memory devices, managing SDRAM banks, and keeping the devices refreshed at appropriate
intervals. The required DDR2-SDRAM SODIMM module should be at least 1G-Bytes DDR2-800.
With two on-board DDR2 SDRAM SODIMMs with the DE4 board, users have the option of
selecting one to perform the demonstration.
