IMPORTANT: If any water drained from the gear lube fill and drain hole, or if the gear lube
appears milky, the sterndrive unit is leaking and should be checked immediately by your
authorized Mercury MerCruiser dealer.
6. Lower the sterndrive unit so that the propeller shaft is level. Fill the sterndrive unit,
through the fill and drain hole, with specified gear lubricant until an air‑free stream of
lubricant flows from the vent hole.

IMPORTANT: Use only Mercury/Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lubricant in the
sterndrive unit.
7. Install the vent screw and sealing washer.
8. Continue to pump gear lubricant into the gear lube circuit until the lubricant appears in
the gear lube monitor.
9. Ensure that the rubber gasket is inside the cap and install the cap. Do not overtighten.
10. Fill the monitor so that the gear lube level is in the operating range. Do not overfill.
NOTE: The capacity includes the gear lube monitor.

11. Remove the pump from the fill and drain hole. Quickly install the sealing washer and
the fill and drain screw. Tighten securely.
12. Reinstall the propeller. Refer to

13. Recheck the gear lube level after the first use.
IMPORTANT: The level of oil in the gear lube monitor will rise and fall during sterndrive
operation. Check the level only when the sterndrive is cool and the engine is shut down.
