1.3.1 What is the purpose of EC Directives?
The EC Directives are issued by the European Council and are intended for the determination of
common technical requirements (harmonisation) and certification procedures with the European
Community. At the moment, there are 21 EC Directives for product ranges. The directives are or will
be converted into national laws of the member states. A certification issued by one member state is
valid automatically without any further approval in all other member states.
The texts of the directives are restricted to the essential requirements. Technical details are or will be
determined by European harmonised standards.
1.3.2 What does the CE marking imply?
After a verification, the conformity according to the EC Directives is certified by affixing a CE marking.
Within the EC there are no commercial barriers for a product provided with a CE marking.
Attaching a declaration of conformity is not necessary for most of the directives. Users or customers
are therefore not aware which of the 21 EC Directives comply with a certain product and which
harmonised standards were considered in the evaluation procedure of conformity.
Controllers with the CE marking exclusively correspond to the Low Voltage Directive. So far, only
recommendations were given for the compliance with the EMC regulation. In this case, the user
himself has to prove the compliance with the CE directives for the installation of a machine. Lenze
has already provided evidence of installing CE-typical drive systems and confirmed this by the
declaration of conformity to the EMC EC directive.
