automatically closed after the wheel has retracted. A locking mechanism
functions as both an up-lock and down-lock. An associated microswitch
on the locking mechanism provides an indication in the cockpit on an
undercarriage position indicator (Chaper 4). A warning horn also sounds
if any inboard throttle is closed and the undercarriage is not locked down.
Four undercarriage ground locks, two to each leg, prevent inadvertent
undercarriage retraction when on the ground.
16. The tail leg is non-retractable and is filled with oil and air (670PSI)
to provide a damping action. An oil filled self-centring and anti-shimmy
device is provided to prevent ‘tail shake’ on take-off and landing. The
leg is attached to the rear fuselage under the tailplane.
Wheel Brakes
17. The brakes are applied by operating a lever on the control column,
and differential action is obtained by a relay valve connected to the rudder
bar. The brakes may be locked for parking by compressing the lever fully
and engaging the locking catch which is beside the lever. The available
pneumatic pressure at each brake is shown on a triple pressure gauge
on the right of the front panel.
