Handling
After Start Checks and Pre-Taxy Checks
5. The
After Start Checks
and
Pre-Taxy Checks
are to be carried out
by challenge and response referring to the FRCs.
Taxying
6. After completion of the
Pre-Taxy Checks,
1200RPM should be
set on all 4 engines before the parking brake is released. Residual
brake pressure is dissipated by several operations of the rudder.
When clear of ground equipment a brake check is to be carried out.
Unless on an upward gradient the outboard engines can be reduced to
1000RPM. The PNF is to be instructed to do likewise with the inboard
engines. Even in light wind conditions the Lancaster is a demanding
aircraft to taxy. The slight delay in brake response coupled with
aircraft inertia make the task of taxying in a straight line a unique skill.
7. Turns are initiated primarily by judicious use of differential brake
- gentle applications of the hand brake with appropriate rudder input
applied. Tighter turns may be executed by use of differential RPM
on the outer engines. As a guide, 1500RPM is normally sufficient to
initiate or stop a turn. The speed should be kept low when turning
in order to avoid high side loads on the undercarriage. The control
column is to be held aft of centre during taxying but even during heavy
braking the tail is unlikely to lift. Excessive brake wear will result from
the use of power against brake. RPMs should be reduced to 1000
when slowing or stopping. During a long taxy, or when the brakes are
operated frequently, ensure the available pneumatic pressure remains
above 300PSI. After stopping apply the parking brake ensuring that the
rudder is central. Avoid setting high wheelbrake pressures to prevent
damage to the brake bags. 60-80PSI should suffice. Once the aircraft
is stationary engines should be reset to 1200RPM.
Pre-Flight Engine Power Checks
8. The aircraft is to be positioned into wind, the parking brake applied
and the control column held fully aft.
The Pre-Flight Engine Power
Checks
are then to be carried out.
