DESCRIPTION
General
1. The Lancaster is a 4-engined mid-wing WWII long range bomber
aircraft.
Fuselage
2. The fuselage is divided into five sections: the nose, the front centre
section, the centre section (consisting of the area between the front and
rear main spars), the aft centre section and the rear fuselage (which
carries the tail unit). These sections are bolted together to form the main
fuselage. The stressed skin monocoque construction is built of light
alloy.
3. The entrance door is on the starboard side just forward of the tail
plane. The door opens inwards and forwards and can be locked from the
outside with a padlock or from the inside (to prevent inadvertent opening
in flight) by a simple locking lever adjacent to the inner door handle.
The handle is locked when the lever is pointing aft and unlocked when
pointing forward. A microswitch on the aft door frame illuminates a door
open light by the Flight Engineer’s station, whenever power is applied
and the door is OPEN.
