a. Two ‘push out’ fuselage escape hatches are above the crew rest
bunk and just forward of the mid upper gunner’s turret. A handle is
provided within each hatch and aligns fore and aft when in the closed
position. Each handle has a trigger mechanism, which must be gripped
before the handle can be turned. The handles are locked when a
dowel pin in the handle lines up with an arrow marked LOCKED.
b. A third ‘push out’ escape hatch is in the roof of the cockpit. Its
operating handle is in the closed position when aligned across the
aircraft and a strap secures it.
c. A large parachute escape hatch is fitted in the nose position which
provides an emergency exit on the ground. The exit is operated by
a pull-to-release handle which, when pulled, allows the hatch to be
brought into the aircraft before an exit is made.
10. Pre-flight, all hatches are to be checked both visually and physically:
locking dowels fully home and locating lugs correctly located.
Crash Axes and Firefighter’s Gloves
11. Three crash axes and two pairs of firefighter’s gloves are provided:
a. One crash axe is in the tail gunner’s position on the port upper
side.
b. A crash axe and firefighter’s gloves are on the port side of the
fuselage opposite and just aft of the entrance door.
c. A crash axe and firefighter’s gloves are stowed on the starboard
side of the fuselage in between the front and rear spars.
First Aid Kit
12. One first aid kit is on the starboard side of the fuselage just aft of the
entrance door. It can be accessed from inside the aircraft or through a
break-through panel from the outside.
