Pre-Take-Off Checks
9. The
Pre-Take-Off Checks
are to be carried out by challenge and
response referring to the FRCs.
Take-Off
10. The combination of the various propeller-induced forces will cause
the Lancaster to swing left on take-off. Therefore, unless experiencing
a strong crosswind from the right, line-up with the aircraft slightly left
of the centreline with the nose pointing about 10 degrees to the right.
Whilst holding the aircraft on the hand brake the PNF is to set Zero
boost on all 4 engines. The Navigator and Flight Engineer should
visually check the 4 engines prior to brake release. Once the aircraft
accelerates and swings gently left onto the centreline, the PF is to ask
for ‘plus 7 boost’ (plus 9 if performance limited on a short runway). The
continued swing left should be anticipated and corrected with rudder
or even a light touch of brake. The Flight Engineer is to call ‘speed
indicating’ then airspeeds at 10kt intervals. The tail should be lifted
by application of a large forward movement of the control column. At
90kts a large elevator input is required to initiate rotation into a shallow
climbing attitude. Into-wind aileron is to be applied in the event of
significant crosswind.
Climb Out
11. Once safely airborne, the brakes should be applied before
undercarriage retraction is ordered. Note that the aircraft wings must
be level during raising or lowering the undercarriage. A shallow climb-
out is required in order that the aircraft may be allowed to accelerate
to the climbing speed of 140kts. Once above 150ft and 120kts the
PNF should be ordered to raise the flaps. There is a rapid flap travel
movement and the associated large nose-down trim change should be
anticipated with an appropriate elevator trim input.
Climb
12. Climb the aircraft at 140kts with power set +4ins boost/2400RPM.
This power setting may be used until approaching the cruise level when
it can be further adjusted to 0ins boost/1900RPM.
