CAUTION:
When transferring fuel from the RESERVE tanks their contents
must be monitored closely to avoid the pump running dry.
25. If a diversion is required, fuel should be used from the OUTER tanks
until 20 gallons remain and then the INNER tanks must be selected.
26. After landing all booster pumps should be switched OFF.
27.
Cross Feed Cock.
The cross feed cock can be used by the ground
crew to balance the fuel post refuelling but the cock is normally kept
closed after being checked for correct operation prior to flight. In the
unlikely event of a fuel leak from any tank or if an engine failure occurs in
flight and time permits, the cross feed cock may be used in conjunction
with selective use of the booster pumps to keep the wings balanced.
MALFUNCTIONS
Booster Pump Failure
28. If a booster pump fails prior to flight, the aircraft may be accepted if
the pump is isolated, dependent on the pump involved, sortie profile, fuel
load and distribution. There are acceptable limits for gland drain leakage
although they are difficult to determine because of the evaporation rate
of AVGAS. If a main tank booster pump fails in flight it probably will not
be apparent until the next pre-flight check. However, if at any stage of
flight fuel starvation is suspected ensure the main tank booster pumps
are ON and, if necessary, select the fuel feed from the other tanks.
Fuel Pressure Light Illuminated
29. The fuel pressure light should always be out whenever the engine
is running or the master cock is ON with a booster pump ON in the tank
selected. If the fuel pressure light does not go out during engine start
(booster pumps OFF) either the EDP has failed or the pressure switch
has malfunctioned. Switch ON the associated booster pump and if the
light is extinguished, the EDP has failed and the aircraft should not be
accepted. If the fuel pressure light illuminates in flight ensure the main
tank booster pumps are ON. If engine malfunctions occur, the engine
should be shut down.
