Display Flying
25. The Lancaster Display is a standard profile with few variables. It
has been designed to enable the aircraft to be shown and heard to
good effect but also to help preserve fatigue. To that end, large control
inputs should be avoided and the fuel loading kept low. Wherever
possible the Number 3 tanks should be empty prior to displaying. If
this is not possible the additional inertia loads in rolling manoeuvres
require anticipation. The temptation to use larger aileron inputs should
be avoided. Although a relatively ‘flat’ display, the nose must not be
allowed to drop excessively during any manoeuvres. With a normal
operating limit of 1.5g, awareness of the g loading throughout the
display must be maintained. In gusty conditions manoeuvring at high
speeds will inevitably result in excursions towards the NE of 1.8g.
26. The initial take-over from any BBMF Fighter Display will be either
a head-on or tail-on procedure. The Fighters will always depart crowd-
left to crowd-right. The Lancaster may do either but will depart on the
reciprocal of its arrival track. Careful planning and venue study is vital
to ensure safe and accurate display conduct.
27. The initial run-in is flown at 150-180kts not below 100ft agl parallel
to the display line. This can be flown with 1900RPM increasing to
2400RPM at the start of the run. The Navigator is to commence timing
abeam the datum. After 11 seconds, in still air, a gentle pull up is
initiated followed, at 13 seconds, by a turn away from the crowd line.
Timings are varied according to wind and display venue. The turn is
continued to track back towards the datum allowing for wind. As the
datum is approached the Bomb Doors are selected OPEN and a 360
°
turn initiated away from the crowd centred on the datum. This turn
is commenced not below 300ft agl and peaks at 500ft at its furthest
point from the datum. This height adjustment prevents the illusion of a
descending turn. Careful coordination is required to ensure a flight path
abeam the datum not below 300ft agl as the Bomb Doors are selected
CLOSED.
28. The turn away from the crowd is continued for a further 30

may be selected in this turn prior to selecting the undercarriage
DOWN once the wings are level. The turn is then reversed onto the
display line for a simulated approach not below 100ft agl. As the aircraft
