Handling
is pointing towards the crowd the RPMs should be increased to 2850.
Prior to passing the datum a ‘go-around’ is initiated by increasing the
boost to +7ins. The nose is pitched up and a turn away from the display
line is initiated. When the wings are level on a 30
°
cut the undercarriage
is selected UP. Once fully retracted a turn back onto the display line
can be initiated whilst simultaneously retracting the flaps and reducing
boost and RPM. Once the aircraft is clean, the final run on the reciprocal
of the arrival track is flown not below 100ft agl.
29. If the BBMF Fighters are briefed to rejoin at the end of the display
the final turn onto the display line is delayed until cleared by the
lead fighter pilot. The Navigator will call the speed which should be
maintained above 140kts. As a formation, the final pass must be flown
not below 300ft agl ensuring the fighter nearest the crowd does not
infringe the display line.
Crowd-Rear Arrival
30. The BBMF has approval to fly a Crowd-Rear Arrival (CRA) at
some venues. Each CRA must have specific approval. The initial
run-in is flown at right angles to the display line aiming to overfly the
datum wings-level maintaining 500ft msd. In order that the fighters may
have sufficient energy in the event of an engine failure the IAS must be
maintained not less than 160kts. The Navigator will call ‘committed’ as
the formation approaches the venue. A 270
°
turn, usually flown to the
left, should be initiated to position the formation back along the display
line. The turn can be continued onto an oblique track away from the
display line before the fighters are cleared to break out. One fighter will
reposition for its display while the other fighter and then the Lancaster
reposition crowd-rear to hold. If the fighters are performing as a pair
(Synchro or Tailchase display) they will remain crowd-front as a pair
while the Lancaster holds alone crowd-rear.
