Table 8-6. S-Register Summary
Register Description
S4
a. S4 holds the ASCII value of the line feed character used when the terminal sends result
codes or other information to the DTE.
b. The default value for S4 is 10(^J, line feed).
c. S4 has a valid range of 0 to 127. If an attempt is made to set the register to a value
outside this range, send the error result code to the DTE and leave the register
unchanged.
S5
a. S5 holds the ASCII value of the character used to delete characters on the command
line.
b. The default value of S5 is 8 (^H, Backspace).
c. S5 has a valid range of 0 to 127. If an attempt is made to set the register to a value
outside this range, send the error result code to the DTE and leave the register
unchanged.
S6
a. S6 holds the length of time (in seconds) the terminal waits for dial tone when a W
modifier is included in the dial stream before any dial digits on applicable networks. It
also holds the time the terminal waits for blind dialing.
b. The default for S6 is 3 (3 seconds).
c. S6 has a valid range of 3 to 255. If an attempt is made to set the register to a value less
than 3, set the register to 3 and send the success result code to the DTE. If an attempt
is made to set the register to a value greater than 255, send the error result code to the
DTE and leave the register unchanged.
S7
a. S7 holds the length of time (in seconds) the terminal waits for the far-end terminal to
initiate secure signaling. For PSTN, when a “W” is detected in a dialing string but not as
the first character (see S6) and S22 is set to X2 or X4, the terminal will wait this length of
time for dial tone detection.
b. The default value for S7 is 30 (30 seconds).
c. S7 has a valid range of 1 to 30. If an attempt is made to set the register to a value less
than 1, set the register to 1 and send the success result code to the DTE. If an attempt
is made to set the register to a value greater than 30, set the register to 30 and send the
success result code to the DTE.
S8
a. S8 holds the length of time (in seconds) the terminal pauses when the pause operator (,)
is detected in the dialing string. The pause operator is ignored when it is not applicable
to the network protocol.
b. The default value for S8 is 2 (2 seconds).
c. S8 has a valid range of 0 to 255. If an attempt is made to set the register to a value
outside this range, the error result code is sent to the DTE and it will also leave the
register unchanged.
S12
a. S12 holds the minimum time (in increments of 20 milliseconds), when in the
Asynchronous Data or Voice On-Line state, that the terminal requires the input from the
DTE to be idle (in continuous stop pulse) before and after an escape sequence to
recognize the escape sequence as valid. S12 also holds the maximum time that the
terminal allows between adjacent characters in an escape sequence to recognize the
escape sequence as valid.
b. The default value for S12 is 50 (1 second).
c. S12 has a valid range of 0 to 255. If an attempt is made to set the register to a value
outside this range, send the error result code to the DTE and leave the register
unchanged. If the register is set to 0, disable guard time processing (three escape
characters, regardless of the before, after, and between character timing constitutes an
escape sequence) and send the success result code to the DTE.
