MUX kits are equipped with active-active port selectors to facilitate
SATA drive installation and access from dual-active RAID controllers.
See the figure below for how it works.

When installed into the enclosure, the SAS connectors on the other
end of the MUX kits will mate with the corresponding connectors on
the backplane board.
There is no need to use MUX kit in a single-controller S12F
subsystem. S12F-G1433 can accommodate both SAS and SATA-II
hard drives without MUX kits.
CAUTION!
The MUX kits are small, delicate components. They must be
handled with care.
