Chapter 4: Viewing and changing Aptiva configuration
Diskette drive (A: or B:)
These options display the size and storage capacity of
the currently installed diskette drive or drives. Empty
drive bays are indicated with a “Not installed” setting.
Your Aptiva computer comes with a diskette drive A:. If
you add an additional diskette drive, it will be
designated as diskette drive B:.
Hard disk drive and CD-ROM drive
These options display the hard disk and CD-ROM drives
that either are already installed or can be installed in
your computer. You can have a maximum of four IDE
drives installed.
The drives are identified as follows:
•
Hard Disk Drive 1 is attached to Local Bus connector
1 on the system board and set as the master device.
This is the hard disk that comes preinstalled with
your computer.
•
Hard Disk Drive 2 (if installed) is attached to Local
Bus connector 1 on the system board and set as the
slave device.
•
CD-ROM Drive 3 is attached to Local Bus connector 2
on the system board and set as the master device.
This is the CD-ROM drive that comes preinstalled
with your computer.
•
Hard Disk Drive 4 (if installed) is attached to Local
Bus connector 2 on the system board and set as the
slave device.
To see if a drive is installed, highlight the option for that
drive and press
Enter
. The screen for that drive appears.
This screen can have all or some of the following
options.
Size
This option displays the size of the installed drive. If
your computer does not have a drive installed in this
bay, the setting is “Not installed.”
Local bus IDE mode
This option lets you set the speed (performance) at
which the drive will transfer data. To get the best disk
performance, run IDE drives (such as a hard disk or CD-
ROM drive) in High Performance mode.
Read prefetch
If the Local Bus IDE Mode setting is High Performance,
you can enable this option for maximum hard disk
performance. This option is not available for CD-ROM
drives.
note:
Some operating systems, such as Windows NT and OS/2,
may require this option to be disabled.
