Introduction
This technical manual describes the Harris Platinum Z16HD+™ In Band On Channel
(IBOC) solid-state radio transmitter, and contains information needed to install, operate
and service the transmitter. This model represents the 16 PA module version of the
ZHD+ series.
IBOC technology provides broadcasters the ability to concurrently broadcast digital
signals over their existing FM radio frequencies. A listener’s IBOC receiver is able to
capture the digital signal, and then switch to the analog signal in the event of the digital
signal’s loss.
There are several methods of combining the analog (FM) and digital (HD) RF to create
an IBOC signal, and there may be up to four possible "modes of operation" (also known
as Modulation Formats) that may be used in a typical IBOC system including a backup
mode. The four "Modulation Formats" are:
FM - Analog RF only: This could be the analog backup mode in the event of a
digital failure.
HD - Digital RF only: Used for Separate Combining with a separate analog
transmitter.
FM+HD - Analog & digital RF (with the digital signal being -20dB below the
analog): also known as Common Combining where both signals are amplified by the
same PAs.
SLC - Analog & digital RF: Also known as Split-level™ or Mid-level Combining,
where the digital transmitter, that is also transmitting a small analog signal (at various
ratios), is combined with a separate analog-only transmitter.
The addition of FlexStar™ components, along with the combination of several different
Harris product configurations operating across the four modulation formats, may create
several hundred distinct systems. In an effort to consolidate and simplify the transfer of
information, a separate FlexStar System technical manual (Harris part# 888-2587-001)
