Telco Operation with Auto Foldback On
When the console is set up with Auto Foldback set on, each Telco channel’s mix-minus automatically toggles
between the lowest assigned program bus while the channel is on, and the Offline bus while the channel is
off. Here is a summary:
●
Telco Channel On: Program 1 is the mix-minus source. If it is not assigned, the source is selected in
this order: Program 2, Program 3, Program 4, and Offline.
●
Channel Off: The Offline bus is the mix-minus source. If it is not assigned (unlit), there is no mix-
minus audio—except for talkback—going to the mix-minus output.
Setting Auto Foldback on is used for call-in contests, live interviews, and live remotes that do not need a
clean return feed. Typically, only the talent or board operator’s mic channel and the caller’s Telco channel
are assigned to Offline. While the Telco channel is off, the caller can hear the talent/board operator through
his/her mic on the Offline bus. The talent hears the caller by assigning the Telco channel to cue. In this
setup, the caller can hear the talent mic all the time, unless it is unassigned from the Offline bus.
If while the caller is waiting to go on-air, he/she must listen to something like a “contest rules and
regulations” recording, it is best to only assign the recording playback channel and the caller to Offline. The
talent can then press the caller’s Off button to talk to the caller, or they could momentarily assign their mic
to Offline to talk to the caller without pressing Telco talkback.
When the caller goes live on-air (the Telco channel is turned on), the caller’s mix-minus audio automatically
switches to Program 1 (assuming the air feed is the Program 1 bus) so that the caller hears everything else
going out on-air, minus his/her own voice.
Auto Foldback Off (Default Setting)
When Auto Foldback is off, the mix-minus audio is not affected by whether the Telco channel is On or Off;
the mix-minus audio is Offline or, if it is not assigned, the mix-minus audio is one of the program buses, in
this order: Program 1, Program 2, Program 3, Program 4.
Auto Foldback Off is typically used to record callers or interviews for later broadcast and for live remotes
where a “broadcast” or clean feedback to the remote site is required so that the mix-minus audio should
never change. In this case, assign the Telco channel only to the air bus (typically Program 1) so that it is
always sent back to the remote, regardless of whether the Telco channel is On or Off. If there are two audio
feeds to the remote, as with an ISDN remote, the IFB feed would go to the talent’s headphones and the
second mix-minus or clean feed would go to the audience. If a special remote broadcast mix is required,
construct it using Offline and then it is the mix-minus audio, regardless of the program bus assignments
and whether the channel is On or Off.
Telco Record Output
A two-channel Telco Record output, with the caller on the left channel and the talent (any mic/line channels
assigned to the mix-minus bus) on the right channel, is available for use with phone call editors like the
VoxPro
®
.
The console does not have a dedicated local Telco Record output, but the Program 4 analog output can be
switched (using a console setup switch) to a Telco Record output. Linked consoles have the stereo Telco
Record output as one of their network signals.
The Record Summary (Table 3-1) lists which signals get recorded.
