SERIES 8116/8118 16-/18-METER EARTH STATION ANTENNA
5-1
SECTION 5 OPERATION
With this elevation-over-azimuth mount, pointing the antenna is
accomplished by jogging the antenna in elevation and jogging the
antenna in azimuth. The antenna can be jogged locally using the
jog switches on the lower mount or remotely using the jog switches
on Model 8864 Antenna Position Controller. In normal operation,
the antenna is jogged to track satellites using Model 8860 Antenna
Tracking Controller or to new antenna locations using the Earth
Station Controller.
GENERAL
With the feed installed and the electronics operational, the
following procedure can be used for pointing at the desired satellite
and peaking on the signal. Typically, the antenna will be driven to
the satellite location using an Earth Station Controller, Personnel
Computer, or Model 8860 Antenna Tracking Controller; however,
if these are not available, the following procedure is used to point
the antenna at a satellite.
SATELLITE
POINTING
PROCEDURE
1. Refer to the Site Preparation manual to determine the required
elevation and azimuth angles.
2. Move antenna to the required elevation angle by turning the elevation
actuator on using jog switches on Model 8864 or the local jog
switches on the lower mount. The elevation angle is measured from
the horizon to the reflector boresight. A good reference surface for
the reflector boresight is between the two elevation pivot brackets.
3. Rotate the antenna in azimuth by turning azimuth actuator on using
jog switches on Model 8864 or the local jog switches on the lower
mount.
4. Peak up the signal by jogging the elevation and azimuth actuators as
necessary until the signal strength is at a maximum.
For circular polarization, no polarization alignment is required.
For linear polarization, peak the feed polarization on the signal as
follows:
FEED POLARIZATION
1. Rotate feed until the signal peaks.
2. Monitor receiver C/N meter or a power meter.
3. Rotate the feed counterclockwise until the signal decreases by 1 dB.
Record the signal level. Mark a line on the feed mounting plate and a
matching line on the hub.
