About Tape Drive Operations
You can perform the following tape drive operations:
•
Create a FUP tape — A FUP tape can be created of a tape drive firmware version already in use in
your library.
•
Erase a FUP tape — When a FUP tape is no longer needed, you can erase it and reuse it as a data
cartridge or again as a FUP tape.
•
Update tape drive firmware:
•
Using a FUP tape
•
Using a firmware image file
•
Retrieve tape drive logs — Tape drive logs can be retrieved from any tape drive installed in the
library.
The following topics provide information on these procedures. For more detailed, step-by-step instructions,
see your library's online Help. To access the online Help system, click the
Help
icon at the top right of the
web client or operator panel user interface.
Creating a FUP Tape
A FUP tape is a tape cartridge that is used to transfer updated tape drive firmware code to the library. When
you create a FUP tape, you save a copy of a tape drive firmware version already in use in your library. The
drive code image is copied onto the FUP tape, which you can then use to update the drive firmware on all
of the specified drives within the library. Drive code versions are independent of the library versions.
The entire process of creating a FUP tape can be performed using the operator panel. If you choose to
create the tape using the web client, be aware that part of the process must be performed on the operator
panel and that you will need access to the physical library.
Details about creating FUP tapes include:
•
FUP
tapes are created using a blank, or scratch, tape.
•
FUP
tapes can be reused.
•
You cannot use a SCSI FUP
tape to update tape drive firmware on a FC tape drive and vice-versa.
•
You cannot use an LTO-1 tape in LTO-3 tape drives to create FUP tapes.
•
If the affected partition is online, it will be taken offline before the firmware update operation is
performed, and brought back online after it is completed. You will be asked to confirm that you want
to take the partition offline.
Note
If the library is still in the process of restarting, the Web browser may display an
error page or message when you try to access or log into the web client. If the
restart process fails, the library will retry every ten minutes until the library
successfully restarts.
CAUTION
If your library has zero import/export
(
I/E) station slots, you will not be
able to perform any drive management functions. See
Configuring I/E
Station Slots
on page 40.
