Optimizing your Windows 2000 virtual memory
In addition to the physical memory (RAM) installed in your computer,
Windows 2000 uses a large file called a
paging file on your hard disks as
virtual memory . Windows swaps data between your computer’s physical
RAM and this paging file as needed. This helps your system to meet the
sometimes extensive memory requirements of large applications. For
instance, editing/compiling a long storyboard requires a lot of memory.
By default, Windows sets an initial and maximum size for these files based
on average computer use. This causes Windows to resize the paging files as
needed. However, if you set your initial and maximum paging file sizes to
the same number, Windows creates one file of the specified size and uses it
for virtual memory without resizing, thus saving the CPU resources
required to calculate the resizing.
In addition, the default size is not optimized for the demands of video
editing. We recommend that you set your initial and maximum paging file
size to three times the amount of physical memory installed in your
computer.
As an example, if you have 256 MB of RAM installed, your initial and
maximum paging file size should be 768 MB.
1 Right-click your
My Computer
icon, choose
Properties > Advanced
> Performance Options
. Under
Virtual Memory
, click
Change.
2 Select the drive where you wish to store your paging file.
3 Enter a number three times the size of your physical RAM in both the
Initial size
and
Maximum size
boxes.
4 Click
Set
to apply the new settings.
