Setting Up the Watchdog Timer

An

AlphaServer

TS15 system running

Tru64

UNIX

contains a watchdog timer that,

when enabled, monitors the running system and takes action should the system become
hung. The watchdog timer is functional only after enabling it within both the RMC
command-line interface as well as within

Tru64

UNIX

.

At the RMC prompt, the commands

enable/disable wdt

are used to enable or disable the

RMC's portion of the watchdog timer functionality. The commands

enable/disable reboot

are used to determine what action the RMC takes in the event that a watchdog timer timeout
occurs. These commands need to be executed only once for the state to persist. For
additional information on these commands, see Section 6.11.

From the operating system, the watchdog timer functionality is turned off by default, but is
controlled by the 'titan' system attribute called

hbrick_watchdog_timer_enable

. This

attribute can be set for the current session with the

sysconfig

command, or longer term via

the

/etc/sysconfigtab

file.

To turn it on dynamically via

sysconfig

, enter the following command:

sysconfig -r titan hbrick_watchdog_timer_enable=1

To turn it off dynamically, enter this command:

sysconfig -r titan hbrick_watchdog_timer_enable=0

To turn it on at the earliest opportunity after boot, add these lines to the

/etc/sysconfigtab

file. This is the preferred method to enable the watchdog timer in the

operating system for normal operation.

When

Tru64 UNIX

shuts down, the operating system portion of the watchdog timer is turned

off, so there is no watchdog timer timeout while in console mode.
