Section 4 Theory of Operation
the PA Cabinet controller refer to the PA Cabinet paragraph in this section. For
information on the Module Controller refer to the Power Amplifier Module section in
this manual.
4.3.1
Main Controller
The Main Controller is a microprocessor based control system that receives commands
from the Graphical User Interface (GUI)/overlay local controller, parallel remote
control input or RS232 remote control inputs. The Serial Remote control is interfaced
either through the GUI or directly to the Main Controller. The Main Controller sends
commands by parallel I/O to the Control cabinet components and sends all control
commands through the CAN serial bus to the PA Cabinets.
The function of the Main Controller board is to be a central control point for the
transmitter. All information from the Module Controllers and the Cabinet Controllers is
sent to the main controller via the CAN bus and is processed. All system input and
output (I/O) such as Exciter, Driver, Cabinet Combiner and reject loads are also
interfaced and processed by the Main Controller.
4.3.2
Main Controller functions
The Main controller is on-air serviceable. The primary functions of the Main controller
are:
a.
Transmitter ON/OFF (both CAN and parallel)
1.
ON command is a 100ms pulse, which turns on the AC contactor and
enables all cabinets and modules.
2.
OFF command is a 100ms pulse also, which turns off the AC contactor and
disables all cabinets and modules.
b.
Exciter/Driver Switch
1.
The manual exciter/driver switch-over can be actuated from the GUI con-
trol screens or from the Life Support board in life support mode.
2.
Automatic exciter switch-over command to the main/alternate exciter/
driver if the active exciter or driver fault is detected.
c.
VSWR Foldback - will reduce the transmitter output power by controlling exciter
output power based on the VSWR foldback algorithm.
d.
VSWR Overload Protection - If the reflected power overload limit is passed, the
system will mute the transmitter by muting the exciter. A VSWR restart (strike)
algorithm ramps up the power after VSWR.
