Section 1 Introduction
NOTE:
For more information about Remote GUI operation , software installation and
upgrades and modem connections refer to the "Diamond Software Manual" -

The Life Support board is the backup control system. This board uses a CPLD and a
parallel interconnect bus to provide basic transmitter functions in the event of a Main
Controller failure. Under normal operating conditions the basic transmitter functions
are handled by the Main Controller via the serial communications bus. If the main
controller fails, the Life Support system keeps the transmitter operational.
In the Life Support mode, the transmitter can still be fully controlled both locally and
remotely. In the Life Support mode, the serial remote control is disabled, however the
discrete parallel remote control interface will still control and monitor the transmitter
(PA cabinet monitoring will not be available). The local control panel on the front of the
Control Cabinet interfaces directly with the Life Support Controller, so it will also
remain usable in the event of a main controller failure. In addition to control functions,
the Life Support circuit provides all the system level protection and makes all the
critical decisions necessary for transmitter protection in the event of a Main Controller
failure.
The Life Support board monitors the activity and health of the Main Controller. If a
failure of the Main Controller is detected, the Life Support takes over all critical control
decisions. When the Main Controller is operable, the Life Support board will pass
control back to the Main Controller and resume normal operation.
The PA Cabinet Controller, located at the top of each PA cabinet, is in control of its PA
cabinet. It uses a micro controller with its own backup life support CPLD on the board.
The board has discrete ON/OFF switches which can be used to turn the PA cabinet on
and off independent of the Control cabinet (for testing or in case the Control cabinet is
not working).
Lastly, each PA Module has it own internal micro-controller which monitors and
protects the module and reports metering, status and fault information to the Cabinet
controller and Main controller via the CAN bus. It is protected against over and under
voltage, over current, VSWR and over temperature. It does not rely on the upper level
controllers for protection.
The control system includes power fail memory which allows the transmitter to
automatically re-power to the same state just prior to the loss of AC power and the GUI
is fed by an uninterruptable power supply. An AC power failure fault indication will be
logged.
