Calibration
Calibration is recommended every two years.
The Series 12000A features closed-case calibration. There are no mechanical adjustments of any kind in
the instrument. All calibration is done under the control and direction of the calibration software.
Calibration data is stored in non-volatile RAM. Refer to the Series 12000A Microwave Synthesizers
Service Manual for detailed calibration instructions (P/N 31232). There are four functions in the
instrument that require periodic calibration using external sources or measurement equipment:
•
Timebase
•
Output Amplitude
•
Frequency Modulation (Series 125XXA/127XXA Only - See Section 4.5.1)
•
Amplitude Modulation (Series 125XXA/127XXA Only - See Section 4.5.2)
Other instrument functions are adjusted either at instrument turn-on or during operation. In addition to
the user-initiated and automatic calibrations, there are certain factory calibration processes. The first
four sections describe in general terms how user-initiated calibration is accomplished. The actual
calibration process is directed by the calibration software. The remaining sections describe the
adjustments that occur at power-up or when certain modes are selected, and the factory calibration
processes.
The equipment required to perform user-initiated calibration consists of (1) a known accurate 5 or
10 MHz source, (2) a Giga-tronics 8540 or 8650 Universal Power Meter with an 80313A or equivalent
power sensor, (3) a 1.00 to 6.00 Vdc source (this source can be a stable power supply and a voltmeter
with 1% or better accuracy). Refer to Table 4-1 for the required equipment for FM calibration.
