3. Driving Directions
The ESP works only when the engine is run-
ning. Deactivate the ESP in special circum-
stances. i.e.:
• The vehicle drives with tire chains.
• When driving on deep snowy or spongy
road surfaces.
• The vehicle gets stuck (e.g., stuck in the
muddy road), and needs to be moved
back and forth.
In the absence of the above, for the sake of
safety, turn on the ESP.
Operating Principle of ESP System
The ESP can reduce the risk of skidding by ap-
plying the brake to the appropriate wheels. The
ESP determines the driver's intention based
on the steering wheel angle and vehicle speed
and other information, compared to the actual
driving conditions continuously. If the vehicle
deviates from the normal running route (e.g.,
skidding), the ESP will correct it by applying a
braking force to the appropriate wheels.
The ESP enables the vehicle to go back to the
stable running state through the torsional force
generated by braking. If the vehicle tends to
oversteer (i.e., drift), the ESP will mainly apply
the brake to the front wheel on the outer side of
the curve. If the vehicle tends to understeer (i.e.,
excessive turning radius), the ESP will mainly
apply the brake to the rear wheel inside of the
curve.
ESP warning lamp is lit or flashing
• After ignition switch or starting switch is
opened, warning lamp shall be ON for
about 2 second then OFF.
• The warning lamp flashes if the ESP ac -
tivates while driving.
• After ESP function is closed, instrument
ES P O indicator lamp would be ON.
• If something is wrong with the ESP, the
ESP warning lamp comes on.
• If the ABS fails, the ESP warning lamp
comes on together with the ABS indica-
tor, and the parking brake and brake
system indicator.
