1.2.2 Why Wear Seat Belts

Seat belt can reduce impact injury of the pas-

senger as much as possible by reducing pas-

senger's forward movement inertia when a

front collision of the car occurs.

Physical Principles of Frontal Im

pact

While driving, both the vehicle and the oc-

cupants have energy (kinetic energy) which

depends on the vehicle speed and the occu-

pants’ mass. The larger the vehicle speed and

the mass, the more the energy upon impact.

In which, the vehicle speed is decisive. For ex-

ample, the released kinetic energy at 50km/h is

5 times that at 25 km/h.

During a crash, the occupants not wearing

the seat belts still move forward at the speed

before the crash due to inertia, but the vehicle

dose not. As a result, the occupants can be in-

jured seriously.
