Checking gear engagement imprint
On the tooth face of large bevel gear, apply a thin and uniform film of red lead oil. At the moment, force is applied
to the concave of small bevel gear shaft (4). Apply red lead oil on the convex of large bevel gear (6). Rotate the
gears, engagement imprints can be obtained on the small bevel gear. Proper engagement imprint location shall be
in the vicinity of the pitch cone in the middle of tooth height, and a bit higher than the small end, and shall not be
less than 3mm~4mm to the end edge. The engagement imprint length shall not be less than 60% tooth length, and
the engagement imprint height shall not be less than 50% tooth height. Adjustment is made by changing the
thickness of the shim (2) to cause axial movement of small bevel gear, and by adjusting the shim (5) to cause
movement of large bevel gear. In order not to destroy differential bearing preload, be sure to add the shims removed
from the bearing block to the bearing block on the other side so that the total number of shims of the left and right
bearing blocks remains unchanged.
If backlash and engagement imprint cannot be adjusted to meet the requirements at the same time (i.e. when
engagement imprint meets the requirement, backlash does not, or vice versa), engagement imprint shall prevail.
Nonetheless backlash shall not be less than 0.15mm. When the gear assembly is disassembled for adjustment
purpose, remember the locations and number of shims. Shims removed but not used in adjustment shall be preserved
for future fuse.
