8. Lock sleeve and clutch gear in place with snap ring
(5). Avoid distorting snap ring during assembly. Seat snap
ring in groove of mainshaft.
9. Position 4th speed gear (4) on m ainshaft and secure
in place with thrust washer (3) and snap ring (2).

10. Rem ove assem bly from vise.
ASSEMBLY OF SHIFTER H O U SIN G
(Key N um bers Refer to Figure 6)
1. Position shifter housing (7) in a vise with expansion
plug openings to the left.
2. Check all three shift rods (2, 12, and 15) in their
proper position in housing to m ake sure they slide freely.
Rem ove rods and apply a light coat of transm ission lubri­
cant to all bores in the housing and to the shift rods as
they are assembled to the housing.
3. Select the longest shift rod (2) and enter longest end
from poppet detents into lower expansion plug opening at
left of housing.
4. Position 1st and reverse shift rod bracket (1) on shift
rod (2). Push shift rod through center and rear bosses and
position 1st and reverse shift fork (5) on rod.

5. Locate shift rod bracket, shift fork and shift rod in
neutral position. Secure bracket and fork to rod with set-
screwws. Tighten setscrews to 45-50 foot-pounds torque
and secure with lockwire.
6. W ith 1st and reverse shift rod in neutral, position in­
terlock balls (13) in cross hole of center boss. Seat inter­
lock in notch of rod.
7. Select the next longest shift rod (15) and enter longest
end from poppet detents into center expansion plug open­
ing at left of housing.
8. C o at interlock pin (14) with heavy grease and insert
pin in cross hole of 2nd and 3rd shift rod. Push shift rod
through center boss and position 2nd and 3rd shift fork
(10) on rod.

9. Locate shift fork and shift rod in neutral position. Se­
cure fork to rod with setscrew. Tighten setscrew to 45-50
foot-pounds torque and secure with lock wire.
10. W ith 2nd and 3rd shift rod in neutral, position inter­
lock balls (13) in cross hole of center boss. Seat interlock
in notch of rod.
11. Select the shortest shift rod (11) and enter poppet end
of rod into upper expansion plug opening. Position 4th
and 5th shift fork (12) on rod as shown in figure 11. Tap
shift rod into proper position and secure fork to rod with
setscrew. Tighten setscrew to 45-50 foot-pounds torque
and secure with lock wire.
12. Shift 1st and reverse shift rod into either 1st or rev­
erse position and then try to shift upper rod. This rod
should be locked out.
13. Return the 1st and reverse shift rod to neutral posi­
tion and check m ovem ent of each shift rod to m ake sure
it moves readily and completely into each gear position.
14. Apply a light coating of sealing cem ent in expansion
plug cavity in shifter housing. Drive each of the expansion
plugs (16) into position in the shifter housing.
15. If expansion plug (8) or breather (6) was removed, in­
stall these com ponents on the shifter housing.
ASSEMBLY OF REMOTE CONTROL
ASSEMBLY

N O T E : The rem ote control a s se m b ly is u se d only
on tran sm issio n s installed in tilt c a b m odels.
1. Install reverse shift finger (23) in control housing (3).
Tighten attaching nut firmly.
2. Install assem bly (6) into end cover (19).
3. Install snap ring (7) and thrust washer (8) on shift fin­
ger shaft (15), then insert shift finger shaft into end cover.
4. Install key (5) on selection lever shaft (20).
5. Slide selection lever shaft (20) onto shift finger shaft
(15). R otate selection lever shat until selection cam and
stud assembly (6) properly engages selection lever shaft.
Then rotate selection lever shaft 180 degrees so that the
shift finger key (5) is pointing upw ard as shown.
6. Position new gasket (9) on housing (3).
7. Position shift finger (4) in control housing (3), then
while inserting the end cover (19) with shafts into control
housing, install shift finger (4) on selection lever shaft
(

8. Install end cover (19) to control housing (3) using at­
taching bolts.
9. Install shift finger screw (21) and new lock wire to
shift finger (4).
10. Position selection lever (11) on assem bly (6), so that
selection lever is parallel to the shift finger shaft (15).
Tighten attaching nut firmly.
11. Position shift lever (16) on shift finger shaft (15), so
that angle “ A ” (see fig. 8) is 14 degrees 30'. Tighten
clam p nut firmly.
