DISTRIBUTOR DISASSEMBLY
(V-6 ENGINES)
NOTE: Key numbers in following text refer to
Figure 1.
1. Remove the distributor cap (1) if not previously re
moved.
2. Remove the rotor (2). Remove the felt wick (9) from
end of cam.
3. Remove screws (21) attaching vacuum control assem
bly to housing. Remove control assembly.
4. Disconnect leads from contact point quick disconnect
terminal.
5. Remove the condenser (25).
6. Remove the point set (4).
7. Remove two screws (27) which attach breaker plate
assembly (24) to housing. Remove plate assembly.
U nsnap tension spring (28) and if necessary the oil
wick (23) can be removed up off plate pin.
NOTE: Do not disassemble the breaker plate
any further.
8. Remove two screws (5) which attach weight cover (6).
Remove weight cover.
9. Unsnap the weight springs (7), then remove cam (10)
and weights (8).
10. If drive gear (13) is retained to shaft with roll pin
(12), drive the pin from gear and shaft, then remove
gear.
11. If drive gear (17) is retained to shaft with riveted pin
(14), file off head of pin, then drive pin from gear,
washers and cushion assemblies. Remove pin washers
(15) and cushion assemblies (16).
12. Remove main shaft assembly (11) from housing (18).
Remove washer (20) from housing or shaft, if used.
The shaft oil seal assembly (19) may be removed from
the distributor if desired, using a conventional seal re
mover.
DISTRIBUTOR INSPECTION
1. W ash all parts except cap, rotor, and condenser in
cleaning solvent and wipe dry.
2. Always install a new contact set assembly when ov
erhauling distributor. Discard old contact set and ob
tain new parts for assembly.
3. Inspect cap and rotor as previously directed under
“ Ignition M aintenance.”
4. The condenser should be tested as explained later
under “ Condenser.” A defective condenser will cause
excessive pitting of contact points.
5. Inspect shaft and bushings in housing for signs of
wear. If bushings are worn or damaged, replace c o m
plete housing and bushing assembly.

NOTE: Key numbers in text refer to figure 1.
1. Press new oil seal assembly (19) into housing with lip
on seal down. Press seal in until flush with housing
surface. Place washer (20) on top of seal, if used.
2. Apply lubricant to distributor shaft at upper bushing
area, then insert shaft into housing.
3. Install distributor drive gear (13) to shaft and secure
with roll pin (12). If drive gear of type shown in inset,
Figure 1 is used, place gear on shaft, insert cushion
assemblies (16) into gear openings, then with washers
(15) over cushions, install new gear pin (14). Peen
over end of pin.
4. Locate weights (8) in position on mainshaft plate. L u
bricate end of mainshaft, then install cam assembly
(10). Install weight springs (7).
5. Attach weight cover (6) to mainshaft plate with two
screws (5).
6. Install vacuum control assembly (22) to housing with
two screws (21).
7. Position breaker plate assembly (24) to housing with
pin of spark advance plate engaged in hole of vacuum
control link. Secure breaker plate with two screws
(27). Install tension spring (28) and cam grease wick
(23) over plate pin.
8. Attach condenser (25) and contact point set (4) in
proper location and secure with screws.
NOTE: Contact point set pilot must engage
matching hole in breaker plate. Connect pri
mary and condenser leads to contact set quick-
disconnect terminals.
9. Check and adjust contact point opening and align
ment. See “ Specifications” later for gap.
10. Check breaker lever spring tension, which should be
19-23 ounces. Bend contact spring if necessary.
11. If distributor is equipped with oil wick (9) lubricate,
lien install wick into end of cam (10).
12. Install rotor (2), then install distributor cap (1) if
distributor is not to be installed at this time.
