tion. Do not back off n i t to align cotter pin hole.
N O T E : Som e axles use a cork seal (17) under nut instead
of flat washer.
PINION BEARING ADJUSTMENT
Pinion bearing m ust be acjusted for pre-load before as­
sembly is installed in carrier. Refer to “ Specifica­
tions” for bearing pre-load and dimensions of adjust­
ing spacers available.
Since installation of oil seal would produce false ro tat­
ing torque the seal should not be installed until after
adjustm ent is com pletec.
1. W ith pinion bearings, and adjusting spacers installed
in cage, rotate the cage several revolutions to assure
norm al bearing contact.
2. Place assem bly in arbor press and apply pressure
(25,000 lbs.) to outer bearing as indicated under
“ Specifications” at end of this publication.
3. W rap soft wire around cage and pull on horizontal
line with spring scale (J-8129) (fig. 16). R otating (not
starting) torque should be within 15 to 35 inch-
pounds. Refer to “ Specifications” for respective axle
spring scale reading.
N O T E : M ethod of determ ining inch-pounds torque with
scale is to divide diam eter of cage by two in order to de­
term ine radius. M ultiply radius in inches by pounds pull
required to rotate cage to determ ine inch-pounds torque.
Exam ple: A n 8-inch diam eter divided by 2 equals 4-
inch radius. M ultiply 4-inch (radius) by 5 pounds (pull)
equals 20 inch-pounds torque.
4. If press is not available, pre-load torque can also be
checked by tem porarily installing propeller shaft
yoke, washer, and nut. Tighten nut to torque recom ­
m ended in “ Specifications” at end of this manual,

then check as previously explained. Remove yoke
after correct adjustm ent is obtained.
DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY
Key num bers in text refer to Figure 17.
W henever inspection shows that bevel gear (11) m ust be
replaced, it is also necessary to install new pinion as these
parts are serviced in m atched sets.
1. Press differential bearing cone (2) onto support case
hubs using support fixture (J-3941) as shown in Fig­
ure 18.
2. Install thrust washer (17) on hub of left side gear
(22), with cham fered edge of washer next to gear;
then place side gear in left differential case (23).
N O T E : Left side gear has short hub.
3. Place pinions (20) and pinion thrust washers (19) on
spider (21); then lay assembly on side gear with gear
teeth in mesh.
4. Position right side gear (18) on pinion gears, then
place side gear thrust w asher (17) on gear hub with
cham fered edge of washer next to gear.
N O T E : Right side gear has long hub.
5. Install right differential case (16) over left case with
punch m arks m ade at disassembly, on case halves al­
igned (View C, fig. 10).
6. Install and tighten differential case bolts (15). Check
assembly for free rotation of gears. T hread lock wire
through bolt heads in such a m anner that wire will be
draw n tighter if bolts should be loosen.
PLANETARY UNIT ASSEMBLY

1. Place support thrust washer (5) in right support case
(4), then install differential assembly (View B, fig.
1 °).
2. Install clutch plate pins and idler pinion pins (7) in
