Figure 12P — Sleeve Lock Property Installed

NOTE: O n transmissions having conventional

gearshift lever, accomplish the following proce

dures:

1. Install gearshift lever pivot pins (4) in control tower

(6); then insert gearshift lever (3) through bottom of

tower. Position shift lever so notch in ball portion

engages pivot pin heads.

2. Install spring seat washer (1) (concave side against

ball portion of lever). Install gearshift lever support

spring (5) against spring seat washer and control

tower.

3. Position dust cover (2) on gearshift lever (3).

4. Install gearshift lever knob.

ASSEMBLY OF TRANSMISSION

(Key Numbers in Text Refer to Figure IP)

COUNTERSHAFT INSTALLATION

I. Install countershaft front bearing (44) in transmission

case. Apply pressure on outer race of bearing only.

2. Position countershaft front bearing spacer on forward

end of countershaft (34).

3. Tip rear end of countershaft assembly (34) down and

lower into transmission case, running rear of counter

shaft through opening for countershaft rear bearing

(32) in rear of case far enough so front of counter

shaft can be lowered into position. Push countershaft

(34) forward into position in front bearing (44).

4. Using suitable installer tool, install countershaft rear

bearing (32). Be sure snap ring is in position in groove

of outer race of bearing. Press bearing into place on

countershaft (34) with snap ring toward rear. Press

bearing into transmission case until snap ring contacts

the case.

5. Install countershaft rear bearing retainer nut (31)

loosely.

REVERSE IDLER GEAR

INSTALLATION

1. Insert one reverse idler gear bearing (36) in reverse

idler gear (35); then install bearing spacer (37) and

the second bearing (36) in bore of idler gear.

2. Install the reverse idler gear assembly (35) in trans

mission case with chamfered teeth on gear toward

rear of case.

3. Insert reverse idler shaft (3K) through opening in rear

of transmission case, into reverse idler gear (35) ana

into forward support boss. Make sure groove for the

retainer lock in rear of idler shaft is at bottom of

shaft (38). Drive shaft in until inner edge of groove is

flush w'ith transmission case. Install retainer lock with

bolt and lock washer. Tighten bolt securely.
