wires attached to the three diodes in grounded heat
sink.
2. Remove the two bolts and lock washers which secure
the grounded heat sink to stator shell, and remove the
heat sink and diode assembly. Bolt nuts at inner side
of heat sink may require holding with wrench as bolts
are removed.
Installation
NOTE: It is recommended that the diodes by
checked for open or shorted condition prior to
heat sink installation, using test lamp or ohm
meter as directed previously under “ Diode
Cheeks."
1. Attach the heat sink and diode assembly to stator
shell with two bolts, lock washers, and special bush
ings. Two stator leads must fit in notches as shown in
Figure 9. Tighten attaching bolts firmly while holding
nuts with wrench.
2. Referring to Figure 9, solder diode connecting wires
and stator leads to diode stems, using rosin core (60
percent tin, 40 percent lead) solder, then coat diode
leads with epoxy.
C A U T IO N : D o not use excessive heat in solder
in g leads to diode stem s as excessively high
tem perature m a y d a m a g e the diode. Also
a v o id b e n d in g diode stems, as internal d a m a g e
to diode m a y occur w h ich could result in diode
failure.
3. Tape leads and connecting wires as shown in Figure 9
to prevent wire movement which could eventually
wear away insulation.
Positive (Insulated) Heat Sink
Removal
1. Remove capacitor lead screw and lock washer to de
tach condenser from insulated heat sink.
2. Cut or unsolder the one stator lead, relay lead, and
three diode connecting wires which are soldered to
diodes.
3. Remove nuts and washers from battery terminal at
outer side of stator shell. Remove bolt, lock washer,
and special bushing which retains positive heat sink.
Hold bolt nut with wrench if necessary.
4. Remove positive heat sink and diode assembly and
two insulators (fig. 5) which are used to prevent con
tact between heat sink and stator.
Installation
NOTE: It is recommended that diodes in insu
lated heat sink be checked for shorts and open
condition before installing heat sink.
1. Locate battery terminal insulator at inner side of sta
tor shell with projecting flange piloted in terminal
hole in shell. Set heat sink mounting bolt insulator in
notch in heat sink, then position the heat sink in sta
tor shell. Install mounting bolt with lock washer and
special bushing through stator shell and insulator, and
place nut on inner end of bolt at insulator. Insert bat
tery terminal (bolt) from inside stator shell, through
heat sink and insulating washer. Assemble flat fiber
washer, steel washer, lock washer, and nut on outer
end of terminal. Tighten bolt nuts firmly.
2. Referring to Figure 5, solder diode connecting wires,
one stator lead, and relay lead to diode stems. Ob
serve the caution previously mentioned to “ Negative
(Grounded) Heat Sink" installation to prevent diode
damage due to heat, or bending diode stems.
3. Tape leads and connecting wires to prevent wire
movement, and attach capacitor lead to heat sink
with screw and lock washer.
DIODE REPLACEMENT
To replace diodes in heat sinks, the specially-designed
tools including Removing Tool (J -9717-1), Installing Tool
(J-9600-2), and Supporting Tool (J-9717-2) or their equiv
alent must be used. With proper tools, any of the diodes
may be replaced with heat sinks either removed or in
stalled.
NOTE: Negative diodes have black markings on
the case, and positive diodes have red mark
ings on the case. Visually inspect the diodes for
color markings, and note that the heat sink
