FUEL PUMP
OVERHAUL
DISASSEMBLY
1. Place m a rk on cover and body to assure assembly of
parts in correct relationship.
2. Remove screws holding (over on pum p body, then
separate cover from pum p body.
3. Inlet valve can be pried from cover recess using thin
blade screwdriver.
4. Remove pum p pulsator cover and diaphragm from
cover, then press outlet valve from opposite side of
cover. Remove valve gaskets.
5. After unhooking fuel diaphragm from rocker arm
link, pull diaphragm rod straight out to prevent d a m
age to seal. Remove diaphragm spring. Remove di
aphragm rod seal from body.
6. If necessary to remove rocker arm and link assembly,
rocker pin must be removed from pum p body and
link assembly. Drive rocker arm pin and end plugs
(when used) from pum p body and rocker arm assem
bly, then remove link and arm.
INSPECTION (REFER TO FIGURE 1)
W hen overhauling fuel pum p the following parts should
always be replaced even though old parts appear to be in
good condition: Diaphragms, gaskets, valves, and rocker
arm links. Inspect remaining parts as follows:
1. M ake visual inspection of pu m p body for cracks and
breakage.
2. Lay pum p body and covers on flat surface to check
for warpage at surfaces contacted by diaphragm. R e
place parts if damaged. Examine tapped holes for
stripped or crossed threads.
3. Inspect rocker arm for wear at point contacted by
link and also for wear at camshaft pad.
4. Replace springs showing evidence of corrosion, fract
ure, or weakness. Rocker a rm spring should always
be replaced since it is subject to constant action
whenever engine is running.
5. Remove stake marks from valve recesses of pum p
covers.
ASSEMBLY
1. If rocker arm has been removed, place retainer and
spring on seal in pum p body, then insert diaphragm
rod through spring and seal. Assemble link in rocker
arm, then insert link and arm assembly into pum p
body and engage hook of link in slot of diaphragm
rod.
2. Align hole in link and rocker arm in pin hole in pum p
body using a dowel or similar object having diameter
slightly smaller than rocker pin. Force dowel back out
of pum p using new rocker pin through opposite side
of pump. Install new plugs, one each end of pin using
a flat-end punch and a hamm er.
3. Place valve gaskets into cover then press valves into
cover. Use section of tubing having an outside diam et
er slightly smaller than valve outer diameter and hav
ing inside diameter large enough to clear valve inner
cage. Press valves into cover recesses, then stake cover
(four places) around each valve.
4. Depress and retain rocker arm to hold diaphragm
level with pum p body while cover screws are being in
stalled. Set cover assembly over fuel diaphragm with
alignment m arks (made when disassembling) on cover
and body matched.
5. Install cover screws, and tighten until heads of screws
just touch lock washers. Release and operate rocker
arm several times; then finally tighten cover screws
firmly.
6. Install pulsator diaphragm and cover to bottom of
pum p main cover. Tighten cover screws firmly.
