3. Rem ove shift rods (1 and 6) from cover, stripping off
forks (5 and 7) as shift rods are removed. Tip cover
on one side and ja r interlock out of shift rod boss.
4. Rem ove shift rod oil seals, in the event new seals are
required.
5. Rem ove transm ission breather assembly from cover.
CLEAN IN G A N D INSPECTION
1. W hen transm issions are overhauled, the com ponent
parts m ust be thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Parts
should be thoroughly cleaned in suitable cleaning sol
vent, then inspected for wear and tolerances.
2. Rem ove all portions of old gaskets or sealing com
pound. Use a stiff brush on all parts.
3. Slush bearing assemblies in cleaning solvent. If solid
particles rem ain in bearings, tap the assembly sharply
on a block of wood to dislodge particles. W hen drying
bearings with com pressed air, do not spin bearings.
Slowly turn bearings with hand while directing air
pressure at right angle to the assembly. Lubricate
clean bearings thoroughly; then cover with clean lint-
free cloth until ready to assemble.
4. G ears having broken, chipped, cracked, or worn teeth
m ust be replaced. Sm all nicks or burrs on gear teeth
m ay be removed with a slip stone or hone. This m eth
od, however, is practical only on very sm all nicks.
5. Snap rings should be replaced with new parts when
transm ission is reassem bled. N ew gaskets should be
used.
6. Refer to “ Specifications” at end of this section for
fits and tolerances.
ASSEMBLY O f SUBASSEMBLIES
COUNTERSHAFT GEARS AND BEARINGS
NOTE: Key numbers in text refer to Figure 1.
1. Drive gear keys (45) in countershaft slots, then using
arbo r press and suitable driver, press countershaft ov
erdrive gear (44) and drive gear (46) into place. Refer
to m arks m ade at disassembly for correct relative
position of each gear.

2. Install new countershaft drive gear snap ring (51) in
groove at forw ard edge of countershaft drive gear
(46).
3. Press cone (49) on front end of countershaft, m aking
sure that cone seats firmly against countershaft.
4. Install 2nd speed gear front snap ring (40) over end of
countershaft. Do not install in groove at this time.
5. Install 2nd speed gear (41) on countershaft, then posi
tion rear snap ring (40) in groove in countershaft.
6. Press cone (38) on rear end of countershaft, m aking
sure that cone seats firmly against countershaft.
MAINSHAFT AND GEARS
NOTE: Key numbers in text refer to Figure 1.
1. Place m ainshaft (30) in soft jaw s of vise, front end up,
then apply heavy gear oil on bearing surfaces. Install
overdrive gear (17) on m ainshaft, then install over
drive and direct clutch gear (13) with shoulder tow ard
overdrive gear.
2. Install m ainshaft overdrive gear snap ring (11) in
groove at front end of m ainshaft.
3. Install m ainshaft overdrive and direct clutch gear col
lar (14), with external teeth tow ard front end of m ain
shaft.
4. Install m ainshaft pilot bearing (52) on mainshaft,
using suitable bearing replacer.

IMPORTANT: Apply transmission lubricant to
dirive gear bearings before installing.
1. Press m ain drive gear bearing cups (7 and 53) into
cap (50) and Install inner bearing (54) on m ain drive
