W hen the approxim ate thickness of shim pack has been
determ ined, final check of gear tooth contact m ust be
m ade using Red Lead M ethod.
G E A R TOOTH C O N T A C T
(RED LEAD)
Gear tooth contact cannot be successfully accom plished
until pinion and bevel gear bearings are in proper a d
justm ent and gear backlash is within limits of 0.006
inch - 0.016 inch.
Check for proper tooth contact by painting a few teeth
of bevel gear with oiled red lead. T urn pinion in direc
tion of norm al rotation, then note tooth impression
on bevel gear. Refer to figure 25 for proper tooth im
pression and instructions regarding m ovem ent of pin
ion and bevel gear to obtain proper tooth impression.

INSTALLATION
Procedure for installation of differential carrier assem
bly is covered in the Service portion of this M anual.
AXLE SHAFT INSTALLATION
Procedure for installation of axle shafts is the same
with axle assembly rem oved or installed. Refer to
the Service portion of this M anual for procedure.
IMPORTANT: After overhauled unit has been in
service for 3,000 miles, the unit should be
drained and refilled with recommended lu
bricant. See Section 0.
