LUBRICATION 0-14
Shaft. Distributor shaft is lubricated through
hinge cap oiler. Apply S .A .E . 20 engine oil until
cup is filled.
Rotor Felt. A felt is used under rotor of some
distributors. Apply 3 or 4 drops of S .A .E . 20 en
gine oil.
S T A R T E R
Some starters are equipped with oiler or plug
at drive end, plug at commutator end, and plug at
middle bearing. At time of installation, apply
S .A .E , 20 at plugs or oilers.

Engine oil is used also to lubricate clevis pins,
linkage, clevises, etc. Application should be made
by brush or spray.
CRANKCASE VENTILATION
G A S O L IN E ENGINES
At first engine oil change the ventilation valve(s)
should be checked for proper operation as des
cribed in G A S O L IN E ENGIN ES (SEC. 6A) under
crankcase ventilation system. Every 12,000 miles,
or 12 months, whichever occurs first, the valve(s)
should be replaced.
V6-53 SERIES D IE S E L (Fig. 13)
It is recommended that the breather tube be
inspected and cleaned, if necessary, to eliminate
the possibility of clogging. This can best be done
by removing the tube from engine (fig. 13), wash
ing it with a suitable solvent and drying it with
compressed air.
The wire mesh pad (element) in the breather
assembly should be cleaned if excessive crankcase
pressure is observed. If it is necessary to clean
the element, remove the upper front cover.
Wash the element in fuel oil and dry it with
compressed air.
Reinstall the element and upper front cover
in same manner as removed.
CRANKCASE BREATHER
G A S O L IN E EN G IN ES
The crankcase breather is a replaceable paper
element type, mounted in container at left rear of
crankcase and should be inspected at each oil
change, and serviced if necessary (fig. 12).
This breather is a dry type, therefore, oil
must not be used on this element or in the body.
Remove and inspect element at least every oil
change. If element corrugations are clogged with
dirt, or if it is oil soaked, install new element.
The frequency of element inspection and chang
ing depends upon severity and type of truck serv
ice. If the truck operates under severe dusty or
sandy conditions, replacement of element should be
more frequent than with normal highway service.
Always wipe the body out thoroughly when replac
ing the element. Install element with open end
down. Make certain the cover is tight, and that the
holes in the bottom are open.
V E N T IL A T IO N V A L V E - G A S EN G IN ES
A ventilation valve is threaded into each cyl
inder head of 6-cylinder engines, or two valves
into intake manifold of 8-cylinder engines. When
valves open, crankcase fumes are drawn into com
bustion chamber to be burned, thereby eliminating
discharge from crankcase into air and reducing
pollution. Every 12,000 miles, or 12 months, which
ever occurs first, the valve should be replaced.
MULTI-PURPOSE GEAR LUBRICANT
(SYMBOL “MP” ON CHARTS)
Multi-Purpose Gear Lubricant, indicated by
the symbol " M P " on charts, must satisfactorily
lubricate heavy duty truck hypoid or bevel axles,
and transmissions, under maximum torque and
speed conditions. It must provide necessary and
suitable load-carrying characteristics to prevent
