Internet Protocol (IP) Routing

Reconnect to the Model 5390 server and enter the CLI stats -o command to make sure
RIP is keyed On.
To disable active RIP, set the interface parameter rip_advertise to none for all Model 5390
interfaces (see
rip_advertise
on page A12-57).
To disable both active and passive RIP, set routed to N and reboot the Model 5390 server. You
do not need to reset option_key; setting routed to N disables whatever type of RIP is currently
running.
Configuring Active RIP
The following section assumes you have read the earlier sections on passive RIP. Where appropriate,
this section refers back to the passive RIP sections to avoid repeating material described there.
Remember that once active RIP is enabled, both passive and active RIP are running on all operational
interfaces.
Defining Routes
After you have enabled active RIP, you do not need to define the
default and static routes described for the configurations shown in
Figure A12-4 and Figure A12-5. The Model 5390 servers will learn about the routes to each other
and to other networks through RIP updates they exchange, provided that, for subnetted networks,
the rip_sub_advertise parameter is set to Y, which is the default (see Advertising Subnet Routes on
page A12-51) and that you have configured subnet masks correctly.
Although the routes required for passive RIP need not be defined after you enable active RIP, you
may want to define a default route and one or more static routes for other purposes. For example,
a default router can act as a chokepoint through which all traffic to and from a network must pass.
And, you can use static routes to reach routers that are not running active RIP.
