Accessing IP Nodes via FastLink II
This section applies to FastLink II versions earlier than 2.x.
After establishing an IPX connection between your remote PC and the Model 5390 ipx or
auto_detect/auto_adapt port, you can also load an ODI-compliant TCP/IP stack. This allows you,
for example, to read UNIX mail and access Netware services within one session on your remote PC.
PC Client Requirements
FastLink II’s implementation of ODI allows you to run IP and IPX on the same connection if:
•
The Model 5390 ODI driver is installed on the PC client.
•
The PC is running a third-party TCP/IP stack that uses ODI and provides the applications you
want, such as ping, telnet, and rlogin.
•
You have configured an IP address for the PC client.
For more information on using third-party TCP/IP packages with FastLink II, refer to the FastLink
II Client Pack document and the README.TXT file on the FastLink II Distribution Disk.
NOTE:
Because an auto_detect or auto_adapt can also detect PPP,
AppleTalk, and CLI connections, you must configure the port for these
types of access as well as IPX. This includes configuring native security
for each protocol (for example, PAP or CHAP for PPP) and for the CLI.
To configure an auto_detect or auto_adapt port for IPX over
PPP (IPXCP), see Configuring Standards-based IPX (IPXCP) on page
A9-7. For security reasons, auto_detect and auto_adapt ports do not
accept SLIP packets. If a SLIP packet arrives on the port, the Model
5390 server discards the packet.
NOTE:
FastLink II allows you to make an IP connection to the Model
5390 port only after you have already connected via IPX to that port.
