Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) Protocol
Recommended Use
In general, Bay Networks suggests that you use standards-based (IPXCP) unless:
•
You need Novell user-name and password (bindery or bindery emulation) security or
proprietary IPX dial-out, call-back, or charge-back on a port. In this case you should set the
port to ndp mode. (You can still use standards-based IPX for other ports, if you want.)
•
You are running a version of FastLink II that predates version 2.x and you do not want to upgrade
your IPX dial-in clients to use a more recent FastLink version.
Enabling IPX
Initially, all IPX functions are disabled on a multiprotocol Model 5390 server. To enable IPX
(proprietary and standards-based), set the option_key parameter. You can set the ipx_frame_type
parameter at the same time to avoid having to reboot twice. The procedure that follows explains
setting both of these configuration parameters.

Obtain a valid IPX value for the Model 5390 option_key parameter.
Each Model 5390 server requires a unique option key. Some option key values are physically
attached to the bottom of the Model 5390 server. Check there, and enter that value as described
in Step 2.
If there is no option key value attached to your Model 5390 server, contact your supplier to
obtain a key. You will need to specify the Ethernet address of your Model 5390 server; it is taped
to the back of the unit.
The option_key parameter activates a variety of Model 5390 features, including tn3270,
AppleTalk, RIP (with dialout and filtering), and IPX. When requesting an IPX option_key,
mention any other option_key features currently enabled for your Model 5390 server.

), issue the CLI stats command with the
–o option, as follows:
