40 XDS
Series
5.3 Stand Alone Configuration
In this mode, a single XDS DC power Supply is operated stand-alone. Power levels from 5 to 15
KW are available in this mode of operation. All settings can be made from the front panel as
indicated in chapter 4 or over the bus as covered in chapters 9 through 12.
5.4 Parallel
Mode
The XDS DC power supply can be paralleled to provide higher output current. This requires two
or more unit of the same model. (Voltage range and power level must be the same). Thus,
different XDS model numbers cannot be paralleled.
The parallel mode of operation is only supported on XDS Series II controller models. Older
generation XDS models may not support this capability. Older XDS units can be easily identified,
as they have no air inlets in the front panel.
5.4.1
Multi box connections
To parallel two or more XDS units, one unit acts as the Master and is used to program the output
of all other units. The remaining unit(s) operate in an auxiliary mode. The output bus bars of all
units must be tied together. The master’s unit external sense connection must be connected as
well.
The master provides the control signal (IMon) for all auxiliary units. This control signal is provided
on Auxiliary I/O connector J21 at the rear panel. A DB9 connector is required to This requires the
use of a 9 pin D-sub connector. Each auxiliary unit (-AUX) has an analog input on J22. A cable
that connects IMon from the master unit to all analog inputs on the auxiliary units is required.
Refer to Figure 5-3 for an interconnect cable diagram. A suitable interconnect cable for a two unit
parallel system can be order through Argantix customer service department
(
). Specify CI P/N 5005-051-1.
Both the Imon output of the master and the analog input on the auxiliary units are isolated from
the DC output of the XDS unit. This means the GPIB or RS232 interfaces can be connected to all
units without grounding either side of the DC output.
Refer to Figure 5-5 for a system-wiring diagram of a 2 box, 30 KW XDS system.
